Ceramic Innovations

Juried Ceramics Exhibition

April 1 – April 29, 2017 · Entry Deadline: February 6
Davenport Gallery

Online registration is now open here.

This international juried exhibition is dedicated to enhancing the public's awareness of contemporary ceramics while providing a venue for established and emerging artists alike to share their functional and sculptural creative endeavors.

Juror – Chris Gustin, Founding Member of the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Newcastle, ME and Owner, Gustin Ceramics Tile Production.

Gustin earned his BFA in ceramics in 1975 from Kansas City Art Institute and then his MFA in 1977 from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. His 20-year teaching career included terms at Parson’s School of Design, Boston University and the Swain School of Design (later Southeastern Massachusetts University, now University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth), where he headed the ceramics program. Along with other ceramicists, Gustin founded the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in 1986, which continues to offer residencies to artists from around the world. He now runs Gustin Ceramics Tile Production and produces large-scale sculptural and studio ceramics.

Says Gustin, “I am interested in pottery that makes connections to the human figure. The figurative analogies used to describe pots throughout history all in some way invite touch. The pots that I respond to all speak of a clear, direct sense of the hand. The hand is celebrated in the work by its maker, whether it is that of a fifteenth century rural potter or a nineteenth century court artisan. And it becomes a necessary tool for the user in understanding the relationship of the object to its function, and subsequently, to how that object informs one’s life.”

Awards

Our efforts to cultivate organizations that acknowledge artists in various disciplines are ongoing. We are very pleased to announce $3,000+ in prize awards this year. Gustin will jury the work submitted online and will present the awards at the opening reception on April 1, 2017.

Request For Photos of Public Art Mosaics

October 1, 2016

Dear MSOP Members,

As part of our May 2017 meeting I will be presenting a "Virtual Mosaic Tour" of Philadelphia and its surrounding areas. I would like to enlist your help!

If you have an image of a mosaic, or know of a location where there is a beautiful mosaic, please email me the image and location, or just the location with a brief description. Sometimes there is no time to take a photo...that will be my job!

Over the coming year I will be building an archive of mosaic images and assembling them for a presentation.

Thanks so much for your help!

Please email to : Rsimone49@aol.com

Or by US Mail: Ricki Lent, 7800 Woodlawn Avenue, Elkins Park, Pa. 19027

News From Zacatlan, Mexico via Trish Metzner!

October 1, 2016

Hi Friends,

I have attached an invitation and more detailed information about our mural inauguration here in Mexico. I hope some of you will have the time to attend. Please share with those who might help raise awareness about this event back home. See you all in November! Looking forward to returning and continuing the momentum.

Best regards,

Trish

September 30, 2016

Dear Friends,

Mayor Marcos Flores Morales of Zacatlan, Mexico will inaugurate the 273m./896 ft. of

mosaic panels comprising Murales Zacatlan, October 8, 2016 at 5:00 PM. Dignitaries

and visitors from Mexico and the United States will attend. Fourteen local artists who

have worked on the project since September of 2014 will join the two initiating and

inspirational powerhouses, Mary Carmen Olvera Trejo of Zacatlan and Patricia Metzner

of Philadelphia, in celebrating its completion. Photographer George Olney from San Luis

Potosi will photograph the inauguration.

This magnificent piece of public art follows the town's retaining wall and walkway at the

edge of the breathtaking Barranca de los Jilgueros (Goldfinch Gorge), including the sides

of Tunnel Road. It contains scenes paying homage to the history of the region, including

Nahuatl/Aztec deities, local agricultural communities, the town's eponymous apples,

fascinating biblical panels at the entrance to the cemetery and the staple of Mexican life

and cuisine: corn.

Wilmette Arts Guild, Chicago, The Village of Arts and Humanities, and Philadelphia’s

Magic Garden supported the project funded by a grant from the Davis Charitable Trust.

This international coalition was formed with U.S and Mexican artists and local officials

in Zacatlan to create a tourist magnet for this charming town designated a Pueblo Mágico

(Magic Village) by Mexico's Secretary of Tourism in 2011.

Pueblos Mágicos are towns that illustrate the cultural richness, natural beauty and

historical significance of Mexico.

We hope that you will help us publicize this worthy and beautiful joint effort

exemplifying the love and respect between our two countries. Excellent photographs are

available from Wilmette Arts Guild photographers Howard Frank, Laura Rodriguez and

George Olney (inauguration) for an expanded presentation.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

Trish Metzner

Dalle de Verre Course Offering by Claire Brill @ Wheaton Village!

September 19, 2016

Dalle de Verre: Into the Thin of it (Mosaics)
November 12 & 13, Saturday & Sunday
10am to 5pm
Location: Classroom
Ages: 14 and above
Class Limit: 12
Class Minimum: 4
Class Fee: $150
Materials Fee: $40 (covers frames, Dalle de Verre, adhesives)
Registration Closing: November 5
Instructor: Claire Brill

One person's trash can be the same person's treasure. While learning to facet the richly colored, inch-thick Dalle de Verre (French for slab of glass), Claire discovered that the residual chips are themselves visually compelling raw mosaic materials. It continued from there . . . Come join Claire's exploration of Dalle's mosaic potential! Learn to process it using a faceting hammer and wheeled nippers. Create a variety of tesserae (pieces): thin and shell-like, cube-like, amorphous. Explore the effect of different substrates under Dalle (reflective and non reflective materials, clear glass). Experiment with placement resulting in outcomes like high dimension and blended colors. Plan to bring home an 8" x 10" mosaic.

Coming this October to MSoP…. Yulia Hanansen!

August 30, 2016

We are excited to invite Yulia Hanansen, an internationally acclaimed mosaic artist to teach at MSoP. She is a second-generation mosaic artist and has been professionally involved in mosaic making since 2001. The mission of her Mosaic Sphere Studio is to build public awareness about the quality of mosaics, and to exhibit the superb qualities of mosaic techniques.

Below is a description of the class Yulia will be offering. Stay tuned for registration details!

"Flower Exploration in Mosaic Art: Contemporary Renderings"
When: 2 days, October 22-23, 2016.

Description: This workshop offers an opportunity to learn about contemporary renderings of flowers in a mosaic technique. The workshop will start with a presentation that discusses in detail ancient and modern representations of flowers and floral elements. A demo will be given on techniques, stylizations, and layouts. As a hands-on part students will create their own mosaic interpretation of a flower based on a photograph or a sketch using a traditional layout or Yulia’s signature brush-stroke technique. During the workshop students will also explore a color palette, flower details, composition, layout, and technical aspects of working with the stained glass modules. Images will be provided or bring your own upon approval of the instructor. All skill levels are welcome. Non-members are welcome to sign up!

PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE FROM YULIA 10/7/2016:
Students will need to bring their own glass. Due to the crisis in the glass industry I am not able to supply any glass for the workshop. Please let the student know that they will have to bring their own glass. I hope they’ll understand. The workshop fee will be reduced to $20 as I’ll bring the rest of the supplies and handouts.

Registration form is below (cut and paste) or request a PDF form from me at lauralynstern@gmail.com
