Reproduction and Gradient Direct Techniques
Update: As of 12/30, the workshop is now full. If you'd like your name to be placed on a waiting list, please email MosaicSocietyOfPhila@gmail.com. If we have any cancellations, applicants will be contacted in the order in which requests were received.
In this intensive 3-day workshop, students will receive instruction in the use of hammer and hardie using mixed marble and smalti to hone cutting skills. Students will gain an understanding of application theory, andamento basics and, through discussion, be introduced to contrast and color selection. Instructor will also demonstrate different methods of direct setting and finishing techniques.
Each student will work on two mosaics. The first will be a 10” x 10” reproduction of a small segment of a classical or Byzantine mosaic. The second will be a 6” x 6” exercise in gradient.
Some mosaic experience is helpful but this method can be taught to beginners through advanced students. However, this is an intensive course with an immersive schedule. There is very little opportunity to make up missed time.
