A Conversation with Artist Melanie Berry
Melanie Berry
The Mosaic Society of Philadelphia is delighted to welcome artist Melanie Berry for an inspiring afternoon exploring creativity, materiality, and the stories hidden in everyday objects. Visiting from the Baltimore, Maryland area, Melanie will share her distinctive approach to mosaic art—one rooted in transformation, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the overlooked materials of daily life.
Melanie’s work invites us to pause and reconsider the objects we handle without thought. By repurposing familiar items and weaving them into new visual narratives, she encourages viewers to reflect on value, consumption, and our personal relationships with the things we use.
With a BFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in filmmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Melanie brings a rich interdisciplinary background to her practice. Her early films stitched together fragments of everyday life into rhythmic sequences of color and form—a sensibility that continues to shape her mosaics today.
As family life shifted her studio needs, Melanie turned toward more accessible materials, breaking down and reassembling the tactile objects of domestic life. Cups, plates, and household fragments became the building blocks of loose, representational compositions. In her current work, she incorporates the traditional principles of andamento, using the patterns and imagery found in dishware to build layered, narrative mosaic constructions.
We look forward to gathering with you for this thoughtful and engaging program celebrating creativity, reinvention, and the beauty of the everyday.
