Immaculate Conception
Join the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia for a rare, one-time-only art immersion designed exclusively for MSOP members and their guests. This intimate, small-group experience brings together an extraordinary concentration of mosaic and stained-glass masterpieces—an itinerary so rich and thoughtfully curated that it would normally require travel across multiple European cities. Instead, we’re bringing that scale of visual and spiritual splendor to Washington, DC for a single unforgettable day, complete with private access, expert guides, and shared meals that keep the group connected and energized.
Our day is curated by Bonnie Fitzgerald, a renowned mosaic artist, educator, and Smithsonian-affiliated tour leader whose deep knowledge of sacred art and decades of international teaching experience make her one of the most respected voices in the field. Bonnie’s warm leadership and keen eye ensure a well-paced, engaging journey filled with close looking, meaningful conversation, and moments of reflection. Her presence—and the intentionally limited group size—creates the kind of access and intimacy that transforms a tour into a truly memorable encounter with art.
Our group departs via private coach from Wynnewood Train Station at 6:30 AM. The itinerary features three extraordinary sites, each offering a distinct artistic tradition. We begin with privileged, behind-the-scenes access at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, home to nearly 94,000 square feet of mosaics. Our private lecture and tour, led by longtime archivist Geraldine M. Rohling, reveal the hidden narratives and technical brilliance behind these monumental works. After an included lunch at Busboys and Poets, we continue to the Washington National Cathedral, where Hildreth Meière’s “Resurrection” mosaic and the luminous stained-glass artistry of Rowan and Irene LeCompte demonstrate how color, light, and pattern shape sacred space. The day culminates at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where shimmering gold tesserae and centuries-old iconographic traditions create an atmosphere of timeless devotion.

As we travel home, we’ll gather for an included group dinner at Silver Diner—an easy, relaxed way to unwind together after a day of extraordinary visual richness. We arrive back to Wynnewood at 9 PM. This is far more than a museum visit; it’s a concentrated pilgrimage of sight and story, crafted for mosaic lovers, sacred-art enthusiasts, and anyone who craves an experience that lingers long after the day ends. Reserve your spot and be part of this exceptional journey.
