Workshop Details
Step beyond the flat plane and into the world of dimensional mosaic foundations in this immersive, hands-on workshop led by acclaimed artist and educator Laura Lyn Stern. Designed for artists of all levels—no prior experience required—this two-day creative journey invites you to explore the sculptural possibilities of custom 3-D substrates using floral foam, wire, mesh, and wedi board. Through guided instruction and intuitive experimentation, participants will learn how to carve, shape, and construct sculptural forms that serve as dynamic bases for future mosaic work. Each piece will be finished with a cement coating, ready for surface treatments such as mosaicking, painting, encaustics, collage, or papier mache— possible surface treatments will be explored through discussion. Participants will create multiple sculptural substrates using a variety of techniques: - Building volume and voids with floral foam in both bas relief and fully 3D applications - Using wedi board as a base for relief carving or as a sculptural support - Forming intuitive wire armatures and shaping mesh screening into expressive forms - Applying cement coatings to unify and strengthen each piece Throughout the workshop, informal group interaction and shared learning will be encourage, hallmarks of MSoP’s educational approach. These synergistic exchanges often lead to unexpected inspiration and lasting connections among participants. At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with your own one-of-a-kind substrates and a fresh perspective on how dimensionality can expand your mosaic practice. Whether you’re a seasoned artist looking to push boundaries or a curious beginner ready to dive in, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn from a master in a supportive, accessible setting.
